Central Washington Advocacy Coalition: Minutes from 5-11-05
Members Present: Dewey, Andy, Chris, Gretchen, and Esmeralda
OLD BUSINESS:
Disability Film Series
Discussion resumed about hosting a forum on “Disability and the Media.” Members talked about whether they want it to be a one-time event or a series of events where one movie would be shown every month for three or four months. Esmeralda had the idea that CWAC should collaborate with the Public Library as part of their film series shown at the Hal Holmes Center; this would allow a greater audience to attend and participate in the event. Gretchen agreed but stressed the importance of maintaining CWAC’s identity as a co-sponsor of the event, since one of the reasons for having the event is to promote the group. Dewey said he didn’t think this would be a problem so long as CWAC presented the idea to the library in such a way as to say we would be co-sponsors.
The group then talked about what movies or shows should be featured. The list included Million Dollar Baby, Blind Justice, Ray, Passion Fish, My Left Foot, My Other Sister, and Rain Man. Everyone thought the movies or shows should represent both negative and positive perceptions of people with disabilities, as well as an array of different types of disabilities. The final movies decided on are Million Dollar Baby, Blind Justice, Ray, My Left Foot, and My Other Sister. No decision was made as to when the film series should occur. A suggestion was made to hold it in the fall when people aren’t as busy; another suggestion was made to hold it in the summer when people are more laid back and have more time. Further discussion on this will resume at the next meeting.
Fundraisers
The clothing fundraiser is now underway. Our consignment account is set up at "Hidden Treasures Within" so find those old clothes you haven't worn in decades and donate them for CWAC!! Our consigment number is # 550. In order to participate you must follow these guidelines: 1)Make sure there are no holes or stains on your clothing; 2)Wash and fold your clothing before putting them into a bag; 3)Mark your bag with the number (550) using a permanent marker; 4)On Tuesday & Wedensday from 10-5pm drop the clothing at the "Hidden Treasures WIthin" consigment shop located at 305 N. Main. For the first 30 days we will receive 40% of the sales. After 30 days, the clothes will be marked down at halfprice and we will still receive 40% of sales. After 90 days, it will be up to you or, anyone else who wants to participate, to decide if you still want to keep the clothing there or pull them out. Otherwise they will remain in the store.
At the last meeting, CWAC voted to sell pizza discount cards from Papa Murphy’s. The group agreed to use the remaining funds to purchase as many cards as we can buy. Gretchen will pick up the pizza cards before the next meeting.
