Hi folks; I was asked by Tim to leave a message here on some issues I'm having and that mayby you folks could help me out or give me some kind of direction on what I can do with my present situation.  My limitations seem to be holding me back in one area and not being able to afford to keep going back to college to get though all the math classes that the colleges require I'm left with what to do here. It took 10 years to finally qualify for one state department called Department of Vocational Rehabilitation but due to hard times trying to get though the math classes I've not been able to get this schooling they say they need for them to help me. Out of the 4 people that have talked to me have stated that with my condition due to my back injury and the limitations this puts on me that I should be checking into SSI.  So what I thought I would do is dig out my records that state what my limitations are and rememeber this back injury was from 1986 to 1990.  Sorry to say I don't have anything newer then this but I will say that becasue of jobs I had to take to survive I've ended up worse and have lost these jobs becasue of this issue.  So if you would be so kind to tell me if there is anything you can do and if there is any perticual information you would like on my condition please let me know. The documents I have now from this injury are from my doctor and L&I. Now there not going to be complete sence I had to also take time off a couple more times because my back had gotten reinjured but there all I have. Let me know if you can.  Thank you much for your time; Kelly

Dear Kelly,

Thank you for posting your question! :)

I have a couple questions for you.  First, how long ago were you a client of DVR?  Second, did they ever talk about retraining you for another profession/career that wouldn't be physically demanding?

Without knowing the specifics of your disability or work history, I would recommend contacting Social Security (1-800-772-1213) and tell them you are disabled and are interested in applying for benefits.  What they will then do is schedule a phone interview to assess whether you should apply for SSI or SSDI.

You are welcome to come in and open a file with one of our IL Specialists.  They then can assist you with any phone interviews or even help you fill out the SS paperwork.  You may call us at 509-962-9620 to schedule an appt.

Hi gretchen: On response to your questions I am still in the care of DVR and yes we did talk about jobs that I physically could do. My first person  I talked to said I only needed a couple of classes to make it so they could help me get back to work in some form of office related job. I've been in construction all my life so to meet my requirements I needed to have the option for sitting and standing so some form of office job was all I needed. My next appointment with here was to have her tell me that she was leaving and that someone else would contact me when they get settled in. I finally get a call from my new contact and she setup an appointment for me to go over whats been going on.  She stated to me that we needed a plan and that what was setup for me last time isn't going to work.  So I had picked networking as a career and was going to school for this. Then when September 11th came around and the incident in New York happened I was called in to join a group of people to decide what to do. The problem was that networking was only for 2 years and DVR was having issues helping previous people they had help get jobs. So after the meeting I was asked if I wanted to finish up the networking and take my chances or go for 4 years.  Well not knowing what the full picture would be if I stayed where I was at or going for 4 years and to the fact they were having issues with people with two years getting back to work my choice was to go back for 4 years.  Now this is where everything starts to go bad.  By switching to 4 year this changed my whole schedual on classes meaning that the year that I went only one class worked tward where I was now heading for a career. So now I'm starting over again. Things were ok and then I started having issues with some of the math classes. Being it seems all colleges have a different name for there classes I'll try to explain where I'm at. For me to be at least at college level it took me 4 tries to get though math98 and math99 is college level and was going to have to take this again because I couldn't understand this either.  DVR did set me up with a tutor that was spending more time remembering how to do this so needless to say after informing DVR of this that was there only choice to help me with my math. The school has a small room with one maybe two tutors in this class that are students that couldn't explain this any better then the teachers in the class and I also tried to catch my teacher when I could be my classes would conflict with when I could see them so this wasn't working out.  So now that I'm running out of money I asked DVR if there was any other alternatives. By this time I have seen 4 different people at DVR because they seem to alter peoples locations all the time, the new person I'm seeing now states that she can't think of any other alternatives and that maybe because of my limitations due to my back injury that I should consider filling out for retirement.  Now when I originally was finally going to be released from Labor and Industries my doctor had said the same thing but I just couldn't think of myself retired in my mid 30s so I declined this option. This is till being thown in my face by 3 out of the 4 people at DVR that I have spent time with. I guess what gets me about this is that it's my back that is bad not my mind so I'm having still a hard time dealing with this but my conditions of my back doesn't seem to be improving either so I guess I am going to have to at least check into this possiblity weather I like it or not.  I started with DVR in the fall of 2002 to this present date and still haven't found a solution on what to do and the person I have now is stating that DVR has done all they can do so here I am.  I probably gave more detail then you needed but maybe that explains the flustrations I have now. As a personal opinion of DVR I really don't understand what there all about. To me there really not about people who have handycaps like me.  Maybe for people who have mental disabilitys or something but sending me places for tests that send back a list of jobs that state what I can do and this list is designed for someone who is in good physical condition or sending me to this place for an informational interview with a woman that ask me first thing why I'm waisting her time becasue I wasn't properly setup by the people they sent me to on what an informational interview was about.  It's been just one big nightmare now that I'm to this point. Now after jumping from one class type to another and not being able to finish any of these classes I'm back to where I was when I first started with DVR. So I'm looking at all my options so I can best way out what to do.  If you have any suggestions from this I would really appreciate it and if you just want me to call the number you posted I will do that. Right now more then one opinion is good for me. I'm now 50 years old and disabled. I'm running out of options that I see and hope you see what I'm talking about.  Sorry for the letter and not just a simple answer to your questions. Thank you for responding; Kelvin

Hi Kelley. There are a couple of Social Security programs. One is called Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). SSDI is a benefit for individuals who have paid taxes (FICA) through payroll and over time built up enough credits that if they should become unable to work do to a disability they can than draw from. There are however some guidelines as to how much you have to have worked or how long has it been since you worked last to qualify.

The other program is commonly known as Supplement Security Income (SSI), and this program is based also on disability. SSI is based on food and shelter needs, any resources including vehicle, income and other cash benefits would affect this benefit.

To determine if you qualify you can call 1-800-772-1213 - You can request to schedule a phone interview.

It might be helpful for you to seek an Independent Living Center near you and speak with their staff.  IL staff are trained to help people with goals that could ultimately allow you to become more independent.  If you give me the county in which you live in I can look up the center closest to you!

Good Luck

Hi Sam: Thank you for your response on this manner. I live in Thurston county.  Any information you have to offer is good at this point. I think I'll be done with DVR soon since there deciding that since I can't finish school that there isn't anything else they can do so anything at this point is still hope for something.  Thank you much; Kelvin

Hi Kelvin:

The Center for Independence in Puyallup might be the closest to you. Their phone number is (253) 435-8490 or toll free 888-875-9769. The Centers like ours typically covers several counties and some times depending on how they are staffed they might meet with you where you live.

Specially since you will no longer be receiving services through DVR, this might be a good opportunity for continued support. Independent Living Centers have a wealth of information and resources available for individuals with disabilities.

Thanks for inquiring with us, and good luck on your search.

This is all been resolved now. I did get a lawyer but it was my suggestion and not the lawyer that solved the issue. Sometimes the questions that are not asked by the lawyer are the questions that needed to be answered. My suggestion to lawyers is get off your butts and do the work your being payed for. It cost me over $6000.00 plus office supplies used which ended up to be somehow over $200.00 when only two letters were sent by my lawyer to SSI.  It was my suggestion and not the lawyers on how to fix the issue. Not a bad deal for a lawyer now isn't it. I'm glad this is all over but I'm also glad not to have to work with any more bottom feeders like these lawyers that hold info to try to drag things out for there own convience. I do want to say also thank you for this forum. You folks did give me some good info on how to go about things.
